From Techno to Technology: How Tine Reuther Found Her Purpose in Information Security

As a teenager, grades were never the defining measure of success for Tine Reuther. What mattered more were the experiences that shaped her, the people around her and the creative curiosity that has guided her throughout life. From friendships and techno parties during her high school years to her role as Chief Consultant at SKI and the career she has built in information security, curiosity has remained a driving force.

Today, Tine Reuther works a Chief Consultant at SKI.

Curiosity, Creativity, Purpose and Pragmatism are keywords in her everyday work.

A Creative Mind Takes an Unexpected Turn

Tine is the kind of person who makes a conversation easy. She speaks openly, reflects deeply and is not afraid to share personal stories. Throughout our conversation, we occasionally drift off topic, but never without finding our way back to a meaningful point. Whether we are talking about the tech industry, women in the field, creativity or even techno parties from her teenage years, every story adds another layer to the person she is today.

When I ask Tine about her journey into the tech world, she surprises me.

"It’s a long and complicated story," she says with a wry smile. So, I sit back and listen.

I learn that Tine is a trained fashion designer, but she quickly realised that the industry did not give her the sense of purpose she was looking for.

"I needed a sense of purpose with my work," she explains.

Still figuring out her path as a young adult, she decided, inspired by her military-trained father, to explore the world of security. This led her to the Emergency and Risk Management programme, where the first steps towards her career in information security were taken.

Bringing creativity into a world of information security

Like many young professionals, Tine did not follow a straight path towards her career. Throughout her studies, she explored different directions and quickly realised that her programme was not a perfect match for the career she envisioned. Instead of seeing this as a limitation, she used internships and academic projects to shape her own professional identity and build a background that combined different interests and experiences.

"I use all my different experiences in my work. Even my creative background can help me in my projects," she explains.

It becomes clear that Tine’s unconventional path has become one of her greatest strengths. Her ability to combine different perspectives is something she hopes others entering the tech industry will embrace. She advices young professionals to not only look in one direction doing their studies.

"Try different things when you’re studying and choose a path for your professional life where you believe there is a purpose” she says, and it’s clear she truly means it.

For Tine, this sense of purpose is also closely connected to the nature of working in tech. The industry is constantly evolving, with new legislation, challenges and systems emerging all the time. This means there is always something new to learn, and she believes that curiosity can be a significant advantage for young professionals entering the field. Their willingness to explore, adapt and keep learning is exactly what allows them to grow in a world that never stands still.

Information security is no longer just about systems. It is about people

The future of technology, and especially information security, lies close to Tine’s heart. She believes that as technology becomes more deeply integrated into our everyday lives, scepticism and critical thinking are more important than ever, especially when it comes to the growing use of AI.

Right now, legislation and regulations are often playing catch-up with technological developments, which puts all of us at a disadvantage. Until the EU and the wider international community establish clearer frameworks for the use of AI, Tine believes that we as a society need to take greater responsibility. We need to question the tools we use, understand the risks and look out for each other.

As our conversation comes to an end, it becomes clear that Tine’s perspective on information security is not only about protecting systems from threats. It is about understanding how technology affects people and ensuring that security solutions work in the real world. For Tine, pragmatism is about finding realistic ways to turn ambition into action without setting the bar so high that meaningful solutions become difficult to understand and achieve. “It’s time for security professionals to be more pragmatic,” she says, as we discuss how meaningful change happens when ambitious security solutions can work in practice.

For Tine, this means grounding information security in everyday experiences, so that people at every stage of life, from children navigating online spaces to older generations facing scam calls, can navigate this new digital reality with a sense of balance.

Because in the end, the strongest information security is not necessarily the most complex. It is the kind that ordinary people can understand, trust and use.
